It's not easy to be part of a horror movie where there are screams and surprises every five minutes, countless chase, multiple monsters and many more scares. A role in a horror film demands so much from a star, physically and emotionally; it can be among the most challenging acting assignments.

No wonder the stars welcomed the chance to be part of Regal Entertainment's "Shake, Rattle and Roll 9" (SRR 9). Aside from challenging and proving themselves as artists, they also automatically become part of an institution. SRR is the longest-running horror franchise in Philippine cinema history. It has become a showcase and launching pad for actors and actresses, not to mention it is a welcome change from the comedy or drama stars usually do on television nowadays.

Lovi Poe and John Prats are two of the stars of the "Christmas Tree" episode. In the story, Lovi's father has passed away. She and the rest of her family visit relatives out of town, one of whom is John, whose home has a big, eerie-looking 8-feet Christmas Tree. By day, the tree is harmless. But by night, it turns into a giant monster with arms and legs.
Direct Paul Daza is all-praises for his cast who is also composed of Gina Alajar, Nash Aguas, John Lapus, Sophia Baars, Boots Anson-Roa and Tonton Gutierrez. "All of them were good in communicating fear and terror," says Paul. To illustrate, he cites a scene where John and Lovi see the monster tree for the first time. "Their expressions were great even though the monster effects of the tree had yet to be entirely in place."

Dennis Trillo, Roxanne Guinoo and Pauleen Luna, did not hesitate to shoot on a flyover in Manila for a showdown between with the Red Cloakman of the "Bangungot" episode. The scene called for Dennis and Pauleen to run throughout the entire stretch of the flyover while Roxanne stood at one side, helpless and crying. Director Mike Tuviera was so impressed at how the three performed. "They were incredible!" he recalls excitedly. "What they brought to the characters resonated with the story. The chase is one of the highlights of the film."

Katrina Halili who plays the "Engkanto" in the final episode, does not have a line of dialogue. Yet she convincingly uses her face, gestures and body to scare Matt Evans, Melissa Ricks, Mart Escudero, Jewel Mische, Felix Roco, Sam Concepcion and mant more. Director Topel Lee describes Katrina as the sexiest ghost to ever hit the big screen. "Pagkatapos ni Katrina mangbighani, mananakot naman siya kaagad! Mahirap ang shifting ng character na ginawa niya!"
